Reveals, Releases, and Really Great Friends

A couple weeks ago, I was able to spend a few amazing days with four women who are my best friends in the world. The trip started as a Christmas gift from one person’s husband and then snowballed into a full-blown all-in FAB 5 hoorah: Destination San Antonio, Texas.

In the few days they were here, we did a lot of fun things, including making the very long trek to my house and the nearby beach. But the thing that struck me most—the thing that always strikes me—is that when the five of us get together, it doesn’t matter what we do. Whether we’re treated like royalty in a five-star resort, or stranded overnight in a hotel in an unsavory city because we missed our connecting flight trying to get to that resort, we are always happy to each be in the company of the others.

When the weekend arrived and my friends had departed, I drove home feeling a glow of happiness that can only come from spending time in the company of other women, and I found myself thinking, hoping. Friendships like ours are increasingly rare.

It is my grandest hope that someday my daughters will be as lucky as I have been and build the kind of friendships that fill in the spaces and gaps in each other’s lives. The kind of sisterhood that should be shared, and maybe used in a story someday.

Do you have a unique relationship with someone? Would you write about it?

NEWS UPDATE:

Guys. I know this has been a LONG time in coming. But I finally have a release date for BIRTHRIGHT! Mark your calendars for May 1st, because—hopefully—it should be available for purchase from all your favorite bookstores on that day (and if you're coming to the LDStorymakers conference in Logan, UT in April, I plan to have a FEW advance copies).

But…but…you haven’t seen the cover yet, right? How will you know what it looks like? Don’t worry. The cover is coming very soon. Like, probably in the next few weeks soon. As in…check back on or around *April 10th, when I will be posting both the cover and also a teaser chapter to whet your appetites. Between now and then, expect updates, signups for events and/or contests, and any changes or other news.

See you soon!

*Date subject to change, but let's hope it doesn't!

Exciting New Release: Sun & Moon by Lee Strauss (Book One in the Minstrel Series) and TWO Giveaways!

Sun & Moon by Lee Strauss
(Book One in the Minstrel Series)
Coming January 26th! If you’re a fan of the movie Inside, Llewyn Davis, ABC television’s Nashville or Colleen Hoover’s upcoming novel, "Maybe Someday", the Minstrel Series is for you! The Minstrel Series is a collection of contemporary romance novels set in the singer/songwriter world. The books are companion novels, with shared settings and characters, but each are complete standalone stories with a HEA (happily ever after) and no cliffhangers!

My thoughts on the book:
After I was able to get past the gorgeous cover (couldn't stop looking at it) and read the first page, I knew this was going to be my kind of story. This is big for me, because I've never read anything by Lee Strauss before, and I'm always hesitant to start reading a book by a new author--especially one that comes so highly recommended. But I was drawn in immediately, turning the ten minutes of reading time I had into two hours and 100 pages.

I have a soft spot for flawed, but lovable characters, and Lee has done a great job in creating this with both down-on-her-luck Katja and mysterious, brooding Micah. Both have troubled backgrounds and lots of baggage, and both are searching for redemption, love, and happiness (though neither of them realizes it). Another thing I love is the rich German culture and beautifully unique setting that gave the story another whole dimension. On top of all that, the author has included ORIGINAL MUSIC, which is, in my opinion, off the hook cool, especially because the main character is a singer/songwriter. So yeah.

If you're a fan of happily ever after stories that are steamy without being explicit, I definitely think this is one to add to your collection.

Katja Stoltz is a risk-taking singer-songwriter hoping to make it in the indie music scene in Dresden, Germany. Micah Sturm's a brooding uptown banker on a quest. Driven to the streets, Katja is picked up by Micah - but he doesn't want what she thinks he does. There’s an undeniable attraction between them, a gravitational pull they both struggle to resist. Katja knows she mustn’t fall in love with this handsome enigma. There’s something dark lurking beneath the surface. He could be dangerous. And even if her life isn’t on the line, her heart most definitely is.

*not erotica - no explicit sex or coarse language

This series is an exciting collaboration between Lee Strauss as an Indie Author and several very talented Indie Singer-Songwriters. Four original songs produced by Norm Strauss are featured in Sun & Moon and are performed by award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter Kim McMechan. MP3 links are included at the end. Check out the music video!

All the songs from the Minstrel Series can be found at Bandcamp. The Minstrel Series also has its own Facebook page. Go Like it to follow all the upcoming Minstrel Series news! Pre- orders now available at the pre-release price of 2.99! (Price goes up after launch) itunes | kobo | Barnes & Noble
Also, now available on Amazon.
Lee is giving away prizes to celebrate the upcoming launch of Sun & Moon.
Enter to win a $50 Amazon gift card, MP3s of all four songs featured on Sun & Moon, and a 12 month calendar from Dresden, Germany featuring many of the settings found in Sun & Moon.

Dresden, Germany
One More Giveaway:

Just because you read about it here, Lee has graciously offered to give away one e-copy of her book East of Eden to one of my readers. All you have to do to enter is leave a comment on this post. Something along the lines of, "Please enter me," or, "Count me in," or something else that tells me you'd like to be considered for the prize. Be sure to include your email address. If I can reply to your comment and have it arrive in your inbox, that works too, as long as I can track down my winner. (And by that I mean I don't want to have to employ the help of the NSA to find you.) If you follow my author page on FB, make sure to mention that as well, and I'll give you an extra entry. (And yes, I will be checking.)

You have until midnight, central time, on Saturday, February 1st. The winner will be notified via email and announced here next week. (I don't usually do a big announcement for prize winners here, but for this one, I will.)

**UPDATE** This contest has changed. First, due to East of Eden being offered free on Kindle this past week, Lee has offered to send the winner their choice of one of her ebooks. Also, since I had some unexpected distractions come up last week, I'm extending the contest deadline to midnight, February 14th, 2014. Valentines Day, because everyone could use a little more romance in our lives, right? Good luck!

Awesome Books WEEK!!! (And yet ANOTHER contest.)

OH. My. Gosh. You guys!

Have you seen the awesome that has been released this week? And by awesome, I mean books, of course. There are so many, and I am excited for every one. SO EXCITED. Like, majorly. BIG TIME. Enough to use three exclamation points in the title of this post, and I never condone actions like that. That is how stoked I am.

Also, I am so very bummed, because all these releases mean launch parties in places where I am not, and so I will be missing some seriously stellar events. There will be tears. No avoiding it. But I am still so excited about these books that I just have to share them with all of you. Because, seriously, if I can’t be to the events, the least I can do is cyber-celebrate.

And because I can’t be with the authors on their big days, I think a little drawing thingie is in order. Here’s what I’m thinking. I want pictures. Send me a picture of you and YOUR copy of any of the following books (or all of them!) and I will enter you into a drawing to win one FREE e-copy of my book, DESCENDANT. That’s right. FREE! You can send me your pics via Facebook or Twitter (tag me using my handle @nicholegiles), or email me at writenichole @ gmail . com by no later than midnight on Saturday, June 8th, and I will draw a random winner. Winner will be announced Wednesday, June 12th- -ish. One entry per book purchased (if you buy all of them, you’ll have an entry for all!). Open internationally.

Deal? Okay then.

Here are your options:

Happy reading, happy buying, and…oh, um, happy June!

TodayTodayToday TODAY!

It’s officially official. My book comes out today!

The sun will come out, tomorrow. Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow…I mean today, today TODAY…there’ll be sun…

Yeah, I’m singing. And now maybe you are too. I’d apologize, but…NAH! If you have a song stuck in your head, maybe you’ll remember who put it there in the first place, and maybe then you’ll remember why.

That person is obviously me. And the reason? MY BOOK IS OFFICIALLY BORN! Release day is here, and this is reason to celebrate. To throw confetti and dance around and eat nummy treats and all that. And that is what I will be doing today.

Also, packing like crazy. Because tomorrow I leave for Utah. So while I’m not doing a huge “MY BOOK IS OUT LET’S CELEBRATE” online party YET, I am still planning an online celebration in conjunction with the blog tour. There are prizes involved. And teasers. And playlists. And other fun things you won’t want to miss. This awesome celebration starts May 6th and goes through the 31st, so there will be lots of chances to win, and lots of things to see.

But also, also, ALSO…there’s this:

As soon as DESCENDANT reaches 50 reviews on AMAZON, I will post a deleted scene that is not in the book or on any website anywhere. At 75 reviews, I’ll post another one, and at 100 reviews, one more. If by some amazing chance, we pass 100 reviews and make it to 150, um, I might be forced to give away some really, really special stuff. Like doodled galleys, and swag, and maybe something else. Something big. Maybe I could spring for a Kindle? Maybe.

(Also, I’d love to make that many reviews on Barnes and Noble and Goodreads, and if we reach 50, 75, and 100 there as well, I will be forced--FORCED, I say--to offer other fun prizes. Tip: your one review can be pasted into all three sites.)

Now, just to clarify, these aren’t just random scenes. They’re ones that are relevant to the story, original scenes that were ultimately cut from the book for various reasons, but that matter. I want to share them with readers, and I am not a patient person, so I’m going to make that offer now. The catch? All this has to happen by May 30th. *gulps* Yep, a time limit. Can we do it? I believe it can be done.

So go forth and purchase, and be sure to REVIEW! (But please read the book first! One star reviews from people who haven’t read books are just plain mean.)  You can buy it on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. (And psst! It's on sale!)

Huge hugs! Thanks for celebrating with me today.

Spring Things

I don’t know about you, but I’m really quite relieved to say goodbye to February and usher in March. It’s like the light at the end of the long winter tunnel. Also, this spring I am looking forward to lots of things. Spring THINGS!

Like my cover reveal. Because I’ve been waiting to show that off for weeks and weeks, and now I finally can!

And blog tour and book launch planning, searching for contest prizes, stuff like that. Because I like to give things away, and I am ridiculously excited about the release of DESCENDANT and can’t wait to share it with the world.

And like spring break. Wherein we take our kids and drive a few hours to Galveston, TX, where there is a cruise port, and we board a ginormous ship and leave all our troubles behind for a week. (Yes, it’s a Carnival Ship, YES, we were scheduled to sail on the Triumph and had to change our reservation, and no, we are not nervous to sail on the Magic, because we’ve cruised before and we know that what happened a couple weeks ago is not something that happens often. It’s like flying on a plane. Crashes happen so rarely that when they do, it’s BIG news. But there are thousands of planes taking flight every single day.)

I am also anxious for spring flowers and planting season and sea turtle hatching season. (Oh my goodness, there’s a national beach near me where this is a seasonal thing and you can go watch the baby turtles waddle out to sea. True story!) And dolphins in the harbor and baby bunnies which show up randomly on my front lawn.

And Cadbury Mini Eggs, because, well, who isn’t excited about those?

Now it’s your turn. What are you most excited about this spring?

Fun Stuff and a Thought About Love

This week, I’m diving into planning fun events leading up to the release of my book, Descendant. The first in a long string of fun things, Giselle at Xpresso Reads is coordinating my cover reveal for March 4th. Anyone can sign up, and there is no limit to how many people can participate. If you’re interested, you can sign up here.

I’m also working on bookmarks, posters, and other fun swag. What does this mean? Uh, prizes. Contests. Chances to win. And maybe, possibly teasers. Exclusive stuff. Not announcing any other dates yet, but working on it, so stay tuned.

*takes a moment to jump up and down squealing*

Please forgive my excitement. It’s just that I thought this day might never come, and it’s ALMOST HERE! And I intend to celebrate in a very big way. I hope you will all join me.

On a different subject, last weekend, a very dear friend of mine came to visit me in Texas. She knows I’ve been feeling a little homesick for my Utah people, and so she did what only the best of friends would do. She bought a last minute plane ticket, and came to hang out for a couple way-too-short days.

And even though I shed a few tears when she left, her visit was so good for me. Because no matter where we live or what we spend our time doing, everyone needs to feel loved sometimes. Not just by our spouses or children (although, that’s also really important), but by other people who matter to us. We all need to be reminded that, regardless of how it sometimes feels, we are not alone.

So, with that thought in mind, what have you done recently to show someone special that you love them?

Spotlight: Donna Hatch, Author of "Guise of a Gentleman" and "Queen in Exile"

*Keep reading, there’s a contest involved!

“Fall in love all over again and find your happily ever after.”

I first met Donna Hatch in Arizona at an ANWA writer’s conference this past February. I’ve heard so many good things about her books.

This week, Donna’s new book, Guise of a Gentleman, was released. It’s the second installment in the Rogue Hearts series, which started out with the book, Queen in Exile. As mentioned above, I haven’t read either of these books yet, but am awaiting their arrival in my mailbox. Since these books are part of a series, I’d love to give you a little bit of information about both.

Queen In Exile, the blurb:

The only surviving member of her family, a princess must place her life and the fate of her kingdom into the hands of a trained killer. But accepting both her destiny and her own dark powers will mean choosing between her people, and the man she loves.

Short, yes. But doesn’t it sound intriguing? I thought so. But I’m going to give a bit more of a blurb for Guise of a Gentleman, since this is Donna’s newest release.

The widowed Elise is a perfect English lady living within the confines of Regency English society for the sake of her impressionable young son. Her quiet world is shattered when she meets the impulsive and scandalous Jared Amesbury. His roguish charm awakens her yearning for freedom and adventure. But his irrepressible grin and sea-green eyes hide a secret.

A gentleman by day, a pirate by night, Jared accepts one last assignment before he can be truly free. Elise gives him hope that he, too, can find love and belonging. His hopes are crushed when his best laid plans go awry and Elise is dragged into his world of violence and deceit. She may not survive the revelation of Jared’s past…or still love him when the truth is revealed.

No wonder I’m excited to read these books! Both sound fascinating. Okay, so I am one lucky girl. Donna has graciously granted me an interview with her. Along with that, she is holding a contest in which she is giving away a free book. Yahoo! I love free books.

NG: Hi Donna. I’m so excited to hear about the release of Guise of a Gentleman. Since I’ve already shared the blurb with my readers, why don’t you tell us about your cover. It’s gorgeous!

DH: Most publishers don't let the authors have any input, but I was lucky -- mine does. I filled out a questionnaire with character descriptions and a concept of what I'd pictured. The finished result was very close to what I'd imagined, although the clothing isn’t exactly Regency, but I like it very much.

NG: Nice. From what I understand, that's very rare in the publishing world. So tell me, what are you working on now?

DH: I'm finalizing the edits on book 3 of the Rogue Heart's Series which isn't titled yet. (Gulp.) Each book is a stand-alone book, about a different brother of the Amesbury family, and the family members wander in and out of each other's books. I’m also starting a new Teen/Young Adult paranormal.

NG: Lots of fun. Now, I have a certain set of questions I like to ask my interview victims...er, um, I mean, guests. I hope you don't mind.

DH: Nope, not at all. Ask away.

NG: He he. *rubs hands together*

NG: What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream? For instance, right now my favorite is Ben and Jerry’s Key Lime Pie.

Donna: Ooh, tough choice. I love almost all flavors of ice cream. I seriously love anything made by Blue Bell. There’s also a flavor called Bunny Tracks that I really love, too. And Cookies and Cream, of course ;-)

NG: Of course. Everyone loves Oreos. But I’ve discovered most people have very particular tastes in literature. So, who is your favorite author? (Besides yourself or me, since everyone already knows we’re both awesome.)

Donna: Oh, well, besides us, I have many; Lynn Kurland, Julia Quinn, Joyce DiPastena, and Sarah Eden, among others.

NG: Ooh, another thing we have in common. I love Joyce and Sarah too. The other two I’ll have to check out soon. But back to you. What is your most favorite thing to do when you’re not writing?

Donna: I can’t pick just one. Read, play the harp, sing, dance, play with my children, snuggle with my husband.

NG: Aw. Sweet. And what are your favorite power snacks that keep you going as you write.

Donna: I don’t snack too often when I write. Usually, I just come out of my writing coma and realize I’m starved and then rapidly consume anything I can get my hands on. If I think about snacking, eat crackers and mixed nuts. I also have a thing for chewing on ice.

NG: Huh. Ice. Who knew? Definitely a fat free choice.

*shrugs*

NG: If you were an animal, what kind would you be and why?

Donna: A really spoiled rich cat who wears a fancy collar and sits on a cushion so I can be fed and petted all day long.

NG: Do you prefer diamonds or pearls?

Donna: Pearls

NG: I see. This tells me you’re really going to shine as an author. One last question. Where can we find your book?

DH: The Guise of a Gentleman is available at Wild Rose Press, Amazon, and all Barnes & Noble Locations (some stores may have to order it for you, but that costs the same as if it were on the shelf).

Contest time:

NG: Donna, I’m going to let you tell my readers about your contest:

DH: Okay, now how to win your free copy (and you have four chances if you do all four):

1. Leave a comment in this blog, then send me an email at donnahatch29 @ gmail.com and put “free book” in the subject line

2. Follow my blog, then send me an email at donnahatch29 @ gmail.com, telling me you're now following me and put "free book" in the subject line

3. Friend me on Facebook, then send me an email at donnahatch29 @ gmail.com, telling me you're now my friend on Facebook and put "free book" in the subject line

4. Go to my website and then find out what is the name of the hero, then send me an email at donnahatch29 @ gmail.com, telling me the answer to the question and put "free book" in the subject line

Remember, for each thing you do, you have another chance to win. Good Luck!!!

NG: Donna, thanks for sharing. I appreciate you taking the time to visit with me today.

A: Thanks for having me!

Book Review: The Sapphire Flute by Karen E. Hoover

By Nichole Giles

The blurb:

It has been 3,000 years since a white mage has been seen upon Rasann. In the midst of a volcanic eruption miles outside of her village, Ember discovers she can see magic and change the appearance of things at will. Against her mother’s wishes, she leaves for the mage trials, only to be kidnapped before arriving. In trying to escape, she discovers she has inherited her father’s secret—a secret that places her in direct conflict with her father’s greatest enemy.

At the same time, Kayla is given guardianship of the Sapphire Flute and told not to play it. The evil mage C’Tan has been searching for it for decades and the sound alone is enough to call her. For the flute to be truly safe, Kayla must find its birthplace in the mountains high above Javak.

The girls’ paths are set on a collision course…and C’Tan will do whatever it takes to keep them from fulfilling their destiny.

My take:

When I first read this book, Karen Hoover hadn’t yet signed on the dotted line of her publishing contract. We’d swapped manuscripts, not for commenting, but because we were each curious about each other’s work. Because of this, and because I’ve known Karen for several years as we’re both members of some of the same writing groups, I’m going to here-by put forth my disclaimer: My relationship with this author or previous reading of this book have not colored my opinion of the quality of writing or story. There. Moving on.

Right away after receiving this manuscript, I felt myself pulled into the story to the point where I didn’t want to put it down—and it was on my computer. I ended up downloading a text to voice converter and loading it onto my iPhone so I could listen to it while I ran my kids around town and did yard work.

Here’s the problem. This story has everything. Magic, action, suspense, mystery, plot twists that have you dying to know what happens next and…one of my favorite elements, romance. Oh, and shape-shifters. Hence the reason I had to read and/or listen straight through.

I bought my copy of this book the day it launched, so excited to finally hold a bound copy in my hands. This is a must read!

There are a few areas where the plot slowed down for me, but I think those parts are sometimes necessary to give the reader a chance to breathe, and for the most part I found those scenes important to character, plot, or world development. The story is written very much in the style of the Harry Potter series, meaning Karen has started at the beginning and given us the back story first—which is totally okay in this book, because it moves fairly quickly—then continued to build the world in a way that young (and old) readers can understand what’s happening.

The point of view changes in about every chapter, moving back and forth between the two main characters and the antagonist, but while several other reviewers found that both distracting and confusing, it didn’t really bother me. Probably because I’m a fantasy reader, and that’s not an uncommon occurrence in this genre. I will warn you that there are lots of oddly named supporting characters, which are somewhat difficult to remember from scene to scene, but I suspect that as the series progresses, we’ll come to know much more about these characters and that will no longer be an issue. As I recall, it wasn’t until the third Harry Potter book that I actually remembered the name of that stupid cat that roams the halls in Hogwarts.

My nitpicks:

While the cover is beautiful and well done, it appears to be created for a younger audience rather than the young adult one for which the story is written. It’s bright and eye-catching, but nothing like books in the same genre. I hope this turns out to be a good thing for sales, and not a turn-off for readers of the correct age group, because it really is a story worth reading.

**Dear FTC: Unlike many other reviewers for this book, I did NOT receive a free advance copy, or any other copy of this book for reviewing. Actually, I went to Barnes and Noble the day it was released and stood in line along with lots of other people in order to buy my copy and have it signed by the author.

So, choice number one:  the winner gets to choose a watch band and face so that their watch is personalized to their tastes and fashion needs.

This contest will include the blog tour hosts, as well as anyone else who HAS READ The Sharp Edge of a Knife and written a review on a blog, Amazon, Goodreads, Shelfari, or other reviewing site.  Just to clarify: YOU MUST HAVE READ THIS BOOK and be prepared to answer two random questions about the contents to qualify. Simply leave a comment on Nichole’s blog, telling specifically where to find your review, and what you liked best about the book and you’ll be entered into the drawing.  (Blog tour reviewers are automatically entered twice.)
The prize? An electronic copy of From the Query to the Call by Elana Johnson. With this book, you will also receive a query critique from the query queen herself. The critique is invaluable for authors looking for a publisher or agent.  Should the winner already own this particular ebook, Nichole will offer an alternate prize.

Bloggers will also receive extra points for every ten comments on their posts, and the winner will be drawn via random.org on April 5th. Yes, I am aware that this is the first day of spring break for some school districts. I, too, have plans that week, which is why I’ll give you ample time to get back to me following the notification of the winner.

Good luck to all!

Launches and Contests and Parties, Yipee!

I don't sleep much some nights. Mostly I think this is because my brain doesn't like to shut down, no matter how tired my body is. As it happens, last night, I was lying in bed trying to get all those voices and thoughts to just **SHUT UP!** when it occurred to me that I promised to blog about all the book launches happening in March, but never followed through. My bad. I'm sorry!Gonna take care of that right now.

The worst part is that by not posting before now, I missed posting about two big parties. Luckily, I did make it to the one this past Saturday--but I missed a triple on Friday *frown, sigh, whaaa* thanks to my kids--where I had the opportunity to visit with my good friend Rachelle Christensen. Her book, Wrong Number is now available wherever LDS books are sold, and I'm so excited for her. You can read my review of this book here, or check back on Monday, March 15th to read an interview with Rachelle.

The next launch is a biggie, and one you don't want to miss. Valor Publishing Group is throwing a massive launch party to celebrate five March releases. Two of these books are by critique group friends of mine, Tristi Pinkston with Secret Sisters

and Kimberly Job with I'll Know You by Heart,

and one is by another close author friend, Karen Hoover, who is finally releasing the long anticipated The Sapphire Flute.

I just adore all these ladies and their work. In addition, Daron Fraley is celebrating the release of his long anticipated book, The Thorn,

as well as publishing veteran Michelle Ashman Bell, who is releasing Summer in Paris.

Now, just so you know, these people really know how to throw a party! They'll have live entertainment by Shaun Barrows, cake, door prizes, and all kinds of other fun activities that are sure to liven your boring Tuesday night. The party is this Tuesday, March 16th from 6-8:30 pm at Barnes and Noble in the Gateway Mall, Salt Lake City, UT.

Pshew. That makes my little launch party sound minor in comparison. But while I don't have Shawn Barrows, I could always stand on a table and belt a show tune at the top of my lungs. Or maybe I'll talk one of my kids into playing the Ukulele. You never know. And I will have cake. Or at least cookies. And door prizes, and other stuff too. Oh, and books, lots of books which you can buy and which I will sign for you and let you have your picture taken with me even. You know, if you want. Because I'm nice like that. It's going to be a blast. All the cool people will be there. (Except Heather and Rachelle who are otherwise engaged and send their regrets--they're still cool in my book.)

Once again, my launch is happening on Saturday, March 27th from 1-3pm at Eborn Books in the Provo Towne Center mall. The store is on the upper level, about three or four stores down from Dillards. And if by some strange chance you happened to forget, this is my book.

And now, news about the blog tour and contest. Yes, I'm having one, and yes, it's going to be loads of fun. The prizes aren't quite as big as the Office Box giveaway, but you know, I can only give away so much in one month. Here's the thing. This post is already pretty long. So...

I'm going to put all the contest information into another post, and schedule it for later this evening. Keep watching for it! And then tomorrow, I'll be interviewing my good friend Rachelle Christensen. You know, the one who's book, Wrong Number launched Saturday. Yeah, her. Going to be way fun.

Stay tuned.

Book Review: "Wrong Number" by Rachelle J. Christensen

The Blurb:

Tidmore did the job, and the body is hidden in the manhole on 32nd street like we talked about. By the time they find him, we’ll be in the green. The intruder will clear the way.” The words were followed by a gruff cackle. Aubree’s heart raced. If Devin was playing some kind of trick on her, it wasn’t funny. She cleared her throat. “I think you have the wrong number.”

When Aubree Stewart receives a mysterious phone call on her way to work, she doesn’t know what to think. At first she assumes it’s some kind of prank. But the call isn’t a practical joke, and Aubree soon finds herself swept up in a world of danger, intrigue, and murder. With help from the FBI, Aubree races to protect herself and what’s left of her family, but the one thing she forgets to protect is her own heart.

I have a confession to make. I actually got to read this book last year. **Snicker** And though it was really great when I read it, Wrong Number is even better now. I loved that from the very first page Rachelle draws the reader right into the heart of the conflict with an expectant mother, so right off the bat there are tons of complications going on. There are so many twists and turns that you never know what’s going to happen. My favorite part is that the plot is unpredictable. That’s so refreshing because I’m one of those people who generally figures out who the bad guy is in the first third of the book, and this time even my best guess was way off.

Wait, no. My favorite part is really the romance, because I'm a hopeless romantic and I can't help but love that stuff. Sorry. (I believe I've acknowledged in past posts the fact that I'm a total dork, but just a reminder, I already know.) This is one of those books that you pick up to read and only set down long enough to take care of necessities, then you go right back to reading. Because of the suspense and the romance.

If I was going to change something, I think I would have liked to see more of the FBI agent Jason, find out his story and a little subplot there, but luckily, I’m told that might be a possibility in the future. Plus, you can only cram so many subplots into one book before things start to get messy. So, yeah.

So, those are my thoughts, minus spoilers that would ruin things from the get-go. You can read the first chapter of Wrong Number here, or just go ahead and order your copy, because once you’ve read it, you’ll be itching to keep going.

Rachelle’s doing a lot of signings around Utah and Idaho, so check her blog or website to find out where you can meet her and buy a signed copy.

And don’t forget to check out the Office Box and Wrong Number Giveaway by either scrolling down two posts, or clicking link on my sidebar.

Ooh, and one last thing. Check out this awesome trailer.

**The author of this blog did receive a free copy of this book, however it was not as compensation for this review. I would have done the review even if I'd bought the book in a store (which I will) and the author would have given me a copy even if I wasn't going to review it. However, my friendship with the author had very little to do with my opinions on the quality of writing, plot, or story.

Yahoo!  This means you can find it in stores sometime in mid-December.  And if you really want a few copies (this book really does make a great gift) you can come buy them at our launch party. And of course, Cindy and I--and probably a few of our contributors--will be signing.

Here are the details:

In other news, last week I held a contest giving away a Twilight inspired scent by Custom Scents Online. These scents are so fun, and there are lots to choose from, so check them out. And the winner is...

Carolyn V.

Wahoo, clap, clap, clap, clap, cheer, cheer, cheer, clap, clap, dance, sing, clap, cheer.  Carolyn, email me your snail mail address and choice of fragrance so I can forward it to Custom Scents and they will get your one ounce dram in the mail.

Book Review: "The Ball's In Her Court" by Heather Justesen

By Nichole Giles

I have a confession. I read Heather’s books out of order. “What?” you say, “Heather Justesen only has one book on store shelves at the moment.” True. Very true. However, Heather just happens to be in my critique group. At the time we started our fab group, she’d already finished The Ball’s In Her Court. Suffice it to say, the first real taste I ever had of Heather’s incredible, romantic writing style was on the sequel to The Ball’s In Her Court. Don’t worry, though. No spoilers here!

The downside to reading books out of order, is that you often know the outcome of the first book—or at least which characters survive or end up together—before you start reading it. So, when I first opened the cover of The Ball’s In Her Court, it was with a preconceived notion of who these characters were. Boy was I ever wrong. This book had me biting my lip and clutching the edge of my seat the whole time. I had no idea all this angst and drama had come before book two! (Thanks for holding out on me, Heather.) Okay, so it’s not really a suspense, but sometimes in romance, the suspense of what will happen next is liable to destroy a woman. You romance fans probably know what I mean.

Here’s the blurb:

She's got a great job, a loving group of family and friends and basketball skills like you wouldn't believe, but Denise DeWalt's life is far from perfect, and she's about to come face-to-face with a past she hoped to leave behind forever.

Twenty-six-year-old Denise thinks she's come to terms with her childhood in the foster care system, but when her old nightmares return, Denise realizes that she must deal with her past once and for all if she ever wants to move on to a brighter future with Rich, the only man who can see past her former life. As Denise's search leads her closer and closer to the one person she hoped she'd never have to face again, she begins to realize that her future depends on just one person--herself.

This emotional and inspirational love story proves that life is full of unexpected twists and turns--especially when it comes to facing your demons, fighting for love, and finding happiness for the future.

My take:

Make sure you have a tissue handy, because when Denise DeWalt faces her demons, they’re the big, scary, ugly types that actually bite. Well, okay, so not literally in this book, but you know what I mean. This poor woman has a lot of serious issues to get through and Heather has done a fantastic job of injecting the emotional heartache and physical pain that come from a troubled childhood. Her experience in working with the foster care system in her home state shines through, and combines with her profound understanding of the angst neglected children often face to give the rest of us a small glimpse into the heart of human nature, and shows us what it takes for a young person to overcome obstacles of such massive proportion.

Not to mention her technical knowledge of the mechanics of writing is stellar.

Don’t worry, though, my romance reader friends, as I’ve previously mentioned—a few times—I would never deem to call a love story with a sad ending a romance. And this book is definitely a romance.

In fact, thanks to Heather’s innate ability to write love scenes, our critique group women have a poll going as to which love interest—in all her many books—is a better kisser. (I’m not going to tell you who is winning, though. You’re going to have to read all her books to find out!) However, in case you’re worried, all of Heather’s books are designated “Sweet Romances” meaning you there are no blush-creating scenes, or love scenes that make you want to skip a page or two. They’re completely clean, and thoroughly romantic.

Also, another bit of good news for you author addicts. Heather has another book—yes, kids, the sequel to this one, currently titled, Rebound—being released this summer. She’s on a role, I tell ya!

This book is a must read for the romance lover in your life—including and especially you. Also, keep it in mind as a wonderful holiday gift idea. Let’s face it; you can’t go wrong by giving the person you love a little touch of romance.

Also, be sure to check Heather's blog on or around November 11th to find out about some fun giveaways she'll be sponsoring.

Oh, I almost forgot. In case you aren’t already sold on this book, take a look at the book trailer.

**The author of this review did, in fact, receive a free, signed copy of this book. However, it was personally handed to me by the author, not because I promised a review, but rather because she would’ve given me one anyway—just as I will give her a free copy of mine when it’s released. That’s what friends do. However, as mentioned in previous book reviews, neither my friendship with the author, nor the free book, had anything to do with the overall outcome of my review. I’ve promised my readers that I will never lie to them and give a glowing review to a book that doesn’t deserve it. And I intend to keep that promise.

I really don't have time to be blogging today, because, well, there's a HUGE party happening tonight, and I'm invited. Actually, everyone is invited. Everyone being all those interested in being part of the cool, "it" crowd. Or just avid readers who want to meet an author who also happens to dabble in politics on the side. (He he.)

I Must Be Crazy

I've done it before. And it was worth it. totally and completely. I've never had any reason to regret the time dedicated, the agony of emotion, the physical exertion and lack of sleep, the actual insanity it takes to write a 50,000 word novel in a month.  And yet, as the end of October looms ever closer, I find I have a stomach full of fireflies--hot and fluttery all at once--and my brain screams for all the many other projects to which I could, and maybe should, be dedicating myself.

Thanksgiving is in November. It's at my house again.  There's scrubbing, and cleaning, and organizing, and shopping to do. Not to mention cooking, preparing, inviting, and planning. And don't get me started on Christmas preparations, or the serious shopping involved in that.

And I've gone and committed myself to participate in NaNoWriMo. What am I thinking?

Clearly, I'm thinking it's about time I got another novel drafted, and forget about everything else in life for a while. Oh, I'll handle the holidays and the family dramas. In fact, now that I think about it, maybe all my other stresses will become fuel for my new story. After all, life does lend the best material.

Now, lets just hope I actually find time to sleep next month.

That's right, kids. November is National Novel Writing Month, in which thousands of authors dedicate themselves to writing an entire rough draft of at least 50,000 words before December first. Some think it sounds easy, others think it's hard. Truthfully, it's a little bit of both. More hard than easy, though. And there are no guarantees that we'll actually produce good work, and most definitely, none of it will be publishable right away. But creatively, it's empowering, and inspiring, and then we get to say we did it.

I think maybe that's the best part. Being able to say you did it.

So if you're a writer, and you want to jump on an author-wagon with other writers, join us! Sign up for NaNoWriMo and come be my writing buddy. Username: NicholeGiles. Now, let's get writing!

On a different subject, I was remiss in mentioning a few other author events/signings.  Tuesday, October 27th at 7:00, James Dashner will be signing The Mazerunner at Deseret Book in Orem. (The big distribution center one, not the one in the mall.) And because he is also the author of The 13th Reality series, I'm pretty sure he'll sign those too.

Also, on November 3rd, Valor Publishing will join Mark L. Shurtleff, the Utah State Attorney General, in launching his book Am I Not A Man? The Dred Scott Story.  This is a big deal.  Not only will Mark be there selling and signing his books, but Dred Scott's great-great granddaughter will take a few minutes to speak. Also Connie Hall, winner of the Cry for Freedom contest held by Valor last month, will be reading her winning entry. Musical entertainment and refreshments are provided. This is a MUST ATTEND! It's going to be way, way fun, and a truly memorable occasion. And if you don't want to see Mark or any of the other amazing authors I hear are attending, you can always come just to see me.

Okay, what else? Oh, Halloween is on Saturday. Have a safe, memorable, fun day, and if you're dressing up as something cool, I want to know about it. Me? Well, considering what November is looking like, sounds like I'm dressing up as an author. Imagine that.

Until next time, write on!
