The Reason I Cried Across New Mexico

Yep. I admit it. I did.

But you have to understand the whole story.

First, it was the second day after we’d left our Utah house (and family and other loved ones behind). We were in two separate cars, and since I was driving my Mustang, it was just me and my son, while the rest of the family (husband, two daughters, two dogs, and a rabbit) were in the car ahead of us. We’d spent the day driving across an area that can only be described as desolate flatland that looked like this:

Well, until the sun when down, then it was just freaking dark.

So, it was dark. I was starving. It had been a ridiculously long day. And then…

My iPod connector died, cutting me off from my choice of playlists. And after about ten minutes, I couldn’t take the silence anymore. So I handed my son a visor clip with some CD’s in it, and had him choose one. He chose The Lion King on Broadway soundtrack. And not long into it, Shadowland came on. And it hit me in about a hundred different soft spots.

Before you feel terribly sorry for me, you should know that musicals usually make me cry anyway, and this is one I’ve always found particularly powerful. It just happened that this song felt absolutely appropriate for that moment in my life. Check it out:

I know, right? (Don’t tell me you wouldn’t have cried too. I know better!)

Now that I’ve just admitted something enormously embarrassing, it’s your turn. When was the last time a well-timed powerful song moved you to tears? (And if you share, I might tell you about another of mine sometime soon.)

Rascal Flatts, "What Hurts the Most" song & video... bawled my eyes out. Not sure if it was the song or pregnancy hormones .. but yeah. Even now I get a little sniffly every time I hear it...

I frequently cry over music. Ridiculous, I know, but it's one of the few mediums that evokes that kind of emotion in me. I'm pretty good at keeping it in but give me a good song and it's all over.

Stepping out into a new place isn't always easy and tearing away from a place you love is almost always hard. But you're amazing and I know you're headed for amazing things.

I cried at the end of the musical, Miss Saigon. Sobbed. And, we just made that drive to and from New Mexico.

Windy, yeah, that one at the right moment could do that to me too. Good one.

L.T., thanks for your faith. And just so you know, crying over music isn't ridiculous. It's amazing that we can be moved in that way. Means we're emotionally movable.

Marcia, that wasn't my favorite drive. I haven't seen Miss Saigon, but I'm adding it to my list. Thanks!
